I'm a sucker for makeup. It's paint for your face! What's not to love? I actually just signed up to try Ipsy.com, and I'm excited about what's in my package for this month! One of my favorite things (admittedly extremely girly), is to makeover my friends for nights on the town, costume parties, or sometimes I'll ambush them with brushes and blush when they thought they were just coming over for a glass of wine (muaha!). Since I'm on a budget, makeup is usually a difficult thing to convince myself to buy. But luckily, there are a TON of youtube videos detailing which high-end makeup dupes are the ones worth trying. I have favorites in both price points, but having been around makeup for a while now, I've figured out which things are worth splurging on and which drugstore items work just as well (sometimes better) than the expensive stuff:
Mascara -- go to the drugstore. (unless you have very fine or short lashes and want to find a serum or mascara that targets those concerns) Try any mascara L'OREAL.
Foundation -- go to the drugstore IF you're willing to look hard. Foundation is tricky: there are some really great cheap options (try Fit Me! from Maybelline for an even medium coverage). For something a little more high-end, MAC does some great light-to-full coverage options, and for a higher price point Laura Mercier and Estee Lauder offer some STELLAR products.
Eyeliner and Eyeshadow-- spend a little extra. You'll be happy you spent a few more $$ on these products. I find that drugstore eyeliner is either too dry and breaks (or there is simply not enough product), and the eyeshadow is not pigmented enough = you need to apply many coats to get it to the color you want. I like Inglot's Eyeliner Gel and Julep's Gel Pencil for eyeliner. For eyeshadow, I like MAC (their loose pigments are REALLY cool, too), and Urban Decay.
Lipstick -- go to the drugstore MOST of the time. I think Revlon lip sticks can definitely get the job done most of the time. They are comfortable to wear, pigmented, and have a big array of colors. I find that almost all high-end brands have some great lip colors, but if you're like me and don't wear lipstick much, it's hard to convince yourself to buy something a little pricier. For a happy medium, I discovered Sephora Collection's Color Lip Last is a REALLY great long-lasting, affordable find.
